Materials & Safety

Every material behaves differently under the beam, and a few of them are genuinely dangerous. This is the cluster to read before you put something unfamiliar on the bed.

Most laser problems are material problems. A sheet that looks identical to the one that cut beautifully last week can char, melt, catch fire, or release something that damages both you and the machine. The single most valuable habit in laser work is knowing what you’re about to cut — and being willing to not cut it when you don’t.

THE ONE RULE THAT NEVER BENDS PVC / VINYL decomposes → HYDROGEN CHLORIDE GAS + moisture in the air HYDROCHLORIC ACID YOUR MACHINE optics · rails · boards YOUR LUNGS corrosive to airways THERE IS NO SAFE POWER SETTING This is not a “use extraction and be careful” material. If you cannot identify a plastic with certainty, do not cut it.
The reason PVC is the one absolute rule in laser work: it damages the machine and the operator, and no setting avoids it. Red is the beam.

Understand the physics, respect the machine.

Everything on this page comes back to one idea: what a material does under the beam depends on how it absorbs that wavelength and what it turns into when it heats. Once that’s clear, most material questions answer themselves.
