Can a fiber laser engrave wood?

Technically yes — practically, no. Here’s why a fiber laser is the wrong tool for wood.

Short answer

Technically a fiber laser can mark some wood, but it is not the right tool. Fiber’s 1064 nm wavelength is poorly absorbed by wood, so instead of a clean mark the beam tends to scorch and burn unpredictably, and the uncontrolled heat is a real fire risk. Results are inconsistent compared with the dark, detailed engraving you get from a CO2 laser. Why fiber is the wrong tool for wood.

Wood doesn’t absorb fiber’s 1064 nm wavelength well, so the energy doesn’t convert into a clean, controlled mark. Instead you get scorching, inconsistent darkness, and uncontrolled heat — which on a flammable material is a genuine fire hazard. Even when it “works,” the result rarely matches the crisp, dark engraving wood is known for.

Use a CO2 laser for wood.
