Cut & Engrave Quality

Charred edges, cuts that don’t go through, faint engraving, or depth that changes across the sheet almost always come down to four things, checked in order: focus, clean optics, the right settings, and air assist.

Work them top to bottom — most quality problems are solved by the first two before you ever touch a setting. Every check here is confirmed on a scrap piece before you commit a real job.

Work on scrap, and keep the lid closed

Every test in this guide runs on a scrap piece of the same material with the lid closed and exhaust running. Charring and flare-ups mean heat — never leave a cutting job unattended, and keep a fire source of ignition in mind on woods, acrylics, and paper.

What you’ll need

  • The focal guide from the machine toolbox
  • Scrap of the exact material and thickness you’re running
  • Lens tissue and denatured alcohol, or a Boss Lens Cleaning Kit

Step 01

Re-focus for the material on the table

Goal: Rule out the single most common cause of poor cuts.

Actions

  1. Re-focus every time you change material thickness. Boss machines focus with a focal guide (manual) or the auto-focus option on the Z/U key.
  2. Manual: rest the focal guide on the nozzle ledge and jog the table (Z-axis) until the material just meets the guide.
  3. Auto: position the nozzle over the material (not bare table), press Z/U, select Auto Focus, and let the table set the focal point.
  4. A lost focus widens the beam at the surface — it looks exactly like lost power, and it chars edges and leaves cuts incomplete.

If it passes

Cut cleans up after re-focusing → that was it.

If it fails

Still charring or not cutting through at correct focus → check the optics.

Step 02

Clean the lens and Mirror #3

Goal: Make sure dirty optics aren’t stealing power from the cut.

Actions

  1. A filmed or pitted lens wastes power at the material — the same symptom as a weak tube. Boss recommends cleaning the focal lens weekly and Mirror #3 (in the head) monthly.
  2. Clean with lens tissue or cotton swabs and denatured alcohol, in a soft swirling motion; never scrape. A Boss Lens Cleaning Kit works well.
  3. Look at the reflection in the lens to spot film you can’t see head-on.
  4. Replace any optic that is cracked, chipped, darkened, or has a worn coating — blemishes waste power and get worse fast.

If it passes

Cut quality returns after cleaning → done; keep to the cleaning schedule.

If it fails

Optics are clean and undamaged but cuts are still poor → check your settings.

Step 03

Match power and speed to the material

Goal: Confirm the settings fit the exact material and thickness.

Actions

  1. Start from Boss’s published material settings rather than guessing — they are charted per material and thickness.
  2. Too slow, or too much power → charring, scorching, wide kerf, flame-up.
  3. Too fast, or too little power → incomplete cuts and shallow, faint engraving.
  4. Always confirm on a scrap piece of the same material before running the real job.

If it passes

A scrap test at charted settings cuts clean and full-depth → run the job.

If it fails

Clean, focused, correctly-set and still poor → check air assist.

Step 04

Check air assist

Goal: Rule out weak or missing air, which chars edges and fouls the lens.

Actions

  1. Air assist blows molten material and smoke out of the kerf and keeps debris off the lens. Weak or no air means soot, charred edges, flare-ups, and a lens that dirties quickly.
  2. Confirm the compressor is on and the regulator is set to the pressure your material calls for.
  3. Check the air line for kinks and the nozzle for obstruction.

If it passes

Edges clean up and the lens stays cleaner with proper air → done.

If it fails

Air is good and cuts are still inconsistent → check lens choice and bed level.

Step 05

Lens choice and a level bed

Goal: Fix inconsistent depth across the sheet.

Actions

  1. Use the right focal-length lens for the job — a shorter lens for fine detail and thin stock, a longer lens for thicker cuts. See the CO₂ lens selection guide.
  2. If depth varies across the sheet, the material or bed is not level — flatten warped stock and confirm the bed sits true.
  3. Re-focus after any lens change, and confirm on scrap.

If it passes

Depth is consistent corner to corner → done.

If it fails

Still inconsistent after all of the above → contact Boss technical support.
