Can a laser cutter cut glass?

No – a laser cutter can’t cleanly cut glass; thermal stress cracks it. A CO2 laser can engrave (frost) glass instead. Learn the limits and how to actually cut glass to shape.

The short answer is no — but a CO2 laser can engrave glass beautifully. Here’s the difference and what to use to cut it.

No — a laser cutter cannot cleanly cut glass. The beam’s heat creates thermal stress that cracks and chips glass instead of cutting a clean edge, so glass is not a laser-cut material. What a CO2 laser can do is engrave (frost) the surface of glass for logos, text, and photos. To cut glass to shape, use mechanical methods — a glass scorer and score-and-snap, or a wet saw. This is true across laser types: no common shop laser cuts glass, and tempered glass is especially prone to shattering.

Why a laser can’t cut glass.

Glass is brittle and conducts heat poorly, so the concentrated heat of a laser builds up stress at the beam and the glass cracks, chips, or shatters rather than parting cleanly. There is no power or speed setting that turns this into a clean cut — it is a property of the material, not a limitation you can dial out. Tempered glass is the worst case: the built-in stress makes it shatter completely.

What a CO2 laser can do: engrave glass.

While it can’t cut glass, a CO2 laser engraves glass very well — frosting a thin surface layer into a bright white mark for logos, text, awards, and photos. How to actually cut glass to shape.

To cut glass, use the mechanical methods made for it: a glass scorer and score-and-snap for straight lines, or a wet saw with a diamond blade for thicker or shaped cuts. Cut the glass to size first with those tools, then bring it to the laser for engraving if you want a decorated, finished piece.
