Prepare your design and layers
A laser works from vector paths for cutting and images/fills for engraving. Build the file in Illustrator, Inkscape, 2D CAD, or LightBurn, then assign layers: one to cut (a vector line the beam follows through) and one to engrave. Engrave before cutting so parts don’t shift.
Set material, focus, and run a test
- Choose power/speed for the material from a tested library; start conservative.
- Place the material flat and set focus (gauge or autofocus).
- Frame the job to confirm placement.
- Test on scrap and confirm full cut-through.
- Turn on air assist and exhaust, close the lid, and cut — staying with the machine.
- Inspect and save the recipe for repeat jobs.
Account for the kerf
The beam isn’t a zero-width knife — it removes a narrow slot of material called the kerf, slightly wider where the beam enters than where it exits. Parts that must fit together (boxes, joints, inlays) need the design offset to compensate.
Stay safe while it runs
Keep the lid closed, run exhaust, keep a fire extinguisher nearby — a small dancing flame at the cut is normal, a steady flame is not. Never cut PVC, vinyl, or unknown plastics, and never run unattended.

Can you cut acrylic with a laser cutter?
Short answer
Yes — acrylic is one of the best materials for a laser cutter, as long as it is a CO2 laser. The 10.6 µm beam is absorbed cleanly by acrylic (PMMA), leaving a glossy, flame-polished cut edge with no extra finishing. “Plexiglass” is just a brand of acrylic and cuts the same way. Keep the protective mask on, run air assist and exhaust, and never confuse acrylic with polycarbonate (which burns) or PVC (which is toxic).
Use a CO2 laser for glossy edges
Acrylic absorbs the CO2 wavelength so well that the cut edge comes off the machine flame-polished — glossy, with no sanding or buffing. “Plexiglass,” “acrylic,” and “PMMA” are the same material and cut the same. Keep the protective mask on both faces during the cut.
Cast vs. extruded — and why diodes struggle
Cast acrylic engraves a bright frosty white, so choose it when a part needs cutting and engraving. Extruded cuts very cleanly, costs less, and melts at lower energy — use a bit less power. Blue diode lasers mostly pass straight through clear acrylic, so they only handle dark or opaque sheet; for clear acrylic, CO2 is the reliable tool.
How much power?
A ~40 W CO2 laser cuts up to about ¼″ acrylic (slow the feed for clean edges), ~180 W is the commercial sweet spot, and 500–1,000 W systems cut thick stock up to ~30 mm. More power buys speed and thickness — not better edge quality.

Short answer
Use a CO2 laser with high power and low speed so the beam burns cleanly through the board, with air assist on to reduce flare-up and charring. Choose flat, laser-grade material — quality plywood or solid hardwood — because cheap plywood hides glue voids that cut unevenly. Wood is combustible, so run exhaust, keep a clear bed, and never leave the laser unattended.
Use a CO2 laser and the right wood

Can a laser cutter cut glass?
Short answer
No — a laser cutter cannot cleanly cut glass. The beam’s heat creates thermal stress that cracks and chips glass instead of cutting a clean edge. What a CO2 laser can do is engrave (frost) the surface for logos, text, and photos. To cut glass to shape, use mechanical methods — score-and-snap or a wet saw.
Why a laser can’t cut glass
Glass is brittle and conducts heat poorly, so concentrated laser heat builds stress until the glass cracks, chips, or shatters instead of parting cleanly. No power or speed setting fixes this — it’s a material property, not a machine limitation. Tempered glass is the worst case and shatters completely.

Can you cut glass with a laser cutter / on a laser cutter?

Can a laser engraver cut glass?

How do you cut tempered glass with a laser?
You don’t — tempered glass is the worst case for a laser. Its built-in stress makes it shatter completely under the heat, and tempered glass also can’t be cut mechanically after tempering. It must be cut to size before it is tempered.
Can the same laser cut glass and metal?
No. Cutting metal needs a fiber laser, and glass can’t be laser-cut at all (only engraved, on CO2). No single common shop laser cuts both — they are different jobs and, for metal, a different machine.

Material Safety
Can you cut vinyl with a laser cutter?
Short answer
No — you should not laser cut vinyl, ever. Most vinyl is PVC, and lasering PVC releases chlorine and hydrochloric-acid gas that is toxic to you and corrodes the metal and optics inside your machine. This applies to vinyl sheet, vinyl records, and most adhesive “vinyl” stickers and decals. To cut vinyl, use a mechanical blade cutter (a craft plotter), not a laser.
Why this is the one hard no
The damage is gradual and permanent — to your lungs, the machine’s frame and rails, and the optics — and the fumes are hazardous even with ventilation. There is no safe laser setting for PVC. It’s the single most important “never cut” material in the shop.
What to use instead
For adhesive vinyl decals, stickers, and lettering, a blade plotter drags a small knife through the film with no heat and no fumes, giving clean, weedable cuts. The laser stays the right tool for non-PVC materials — wood, acrylic, leather, paper.
How to tell if it’s safe
Treat anything labeled vinyl, PVC, or unknown flexible plastic as not laser-safe until proven otherwise. Safety data sheets list PVC/chlorine content. If you can’t confirm a material is chlorine-free, don’t run it.

Short answer
It depends on the material, its thickness, the laser’s power, and how detailed the job is. Thin materials cut in seconds per part; thick hardwood or multiple passes take much longer; and a fine raster engraving can run from minutes to over an hour. The most accurate answer comes from your software’s time estimate plus a quick test.
What determines the time
- Cut vs. engrave: vector cuts are fast; raster engraving fills line by line and is slower.
- Material & thickness: thin and easy is quick; thick or dense needs slower speeds or extra passes.
- Power: more wattage cuts faster.
