CO₂ Mirror & Beam Alignment

Weak cuts, power that seems to have fallen off, or a beam that no longer lands where it should usually trace back to the optical path — the laser tube and the three mirrors that steer the beam to the lens.

Boss aligns and QA-checks every machine before it ships, so a new machine needs no adjustment; optics drift only from a hard bump or rough transit. Boss recommends checking alignment about once a month — and calling technical support before you touch a mirror. This guide explains the beam path and Boss’s own tape-test method so you can tell whether alignment is really the problem and, if it is, correct it safely.

Before you fire a single pulse

The CO₂ beam is invisible and Class 4. The red dot is only a pointing guide — not the beam. A beam that misses a mirror can shoot into the room, so keep people, hands, and eyes out of the beam path and fire only the single controlled pulse described here. Turn the machine OFF whenever you touch a bracket or screw. Boss recommends contacting technical support before adjusting the optics.

What you’ll need

  • Low-tack masking or painter’s tape (leaves no residue)
  • A piece of cardboard, for a target
  • The Allen keys from the machine toolbox
  • Lens tissue and denatured alcohol, or a Boss Lens Cleaning Kit

Step 01

Rule out the easy causes first

Goal: Confirm the problem is really alignment before you touch a mirror.

Actions

  1. Re-focus the lens for the material on the table — a lost focus looks exactly like lost power.
  2. Clean the focal lens (Boss recommends weekly) and Mirror #3 in the head with lens tissue and denatured alcohol. A dirty or pitted optic wastes power the same way a misaligned one does.
  3. Inspect the lens and mirrors for chips, scratches, or a darkened coating. Damaged optics get replaced, not realigned.
  4. If cuts are still weak with clean, focused, undamaged optics, call Boss technical support before adjusting anything — Boss recommends this before any optical adjustment.

If it passes

Power returns after focusing and cleaning — it was never alignment. Stop here.

If it fails

Still weak with clean, focused, undamaged optics → continue to the beam path.

Step 02

Understand the beam path

Goal: Know where the beam travels, and in what order to tune, before you change anything.

Actions

  1. The beam leaves the tube at the rear and travels in a straight line to Mirror 1.
  2. Mirror 1 sends it to Mirror 2; Mirror 2 sends it to Mirror 3, inside the laser head.
  3. Mirror 3 turns the beam straight down through the focal lens to the material.
  4. “Aligned” means each element strikes the next one dead center. You always tune in path order: tube → M1, then M1 → M2, then M2 → the head.

If it passes

You can trace the path on your own machine and identify all three mirrors → go find where the beam actually lands.

If it fails

Not sure which mirror is which → stop and call support rather than adjust the wrong one.

Step 03

Tape-test each mirror

Goal: Find exactly where the beam lands, using Boss’s masking-tape method.

Actions

  1. With the machine OFF, lay a piece of low-tack tape flat over Mirror 1.
  2. Close the lid, then fire one short pulse with the Pulse key on the control panel. The beam burns a small mark through the tape.
  3. Read the mark: dead center means that mirror is aligned; off-center means it needs adjustment.
  4. If no mark appears at all, the beam is missing the mirror — hold a piece of cardboard nearby (machine off between shots) to see where it is actually pointing.
  5. Work in path order: test Mirror 1 first, then Mirror 2, then the mirror in the laser head.

If it passes

A burn mark lands dead center on every mirror → alignment is good. Re-focus and run a test cut.

If it fails

Any mark is off-center, or missing → that is the mirror to adjust next.

Step 04

Adjust with the bracket screws

Goal: Walk the beam onto the center of each next mirror using the fine screws.

Actions

  1. Machine OFF. Each mirror bracket has coarse (macro) screws and fine (micro) screws — you will almost always need only the micro screws.
  2. Nudge the mirror so the beam moves toward center. Make one small change, then fire a single pulse-test to check. Repeat.
  3. To steer the tube itself onto Mirror 1: the tube bracket adjusts vertically with the height wheel and horizontally via the four Allen screws at its base (about ½″ of travel).
  4. Tune strictly in order — tube onto Mirror 1, Mirror 1 onto Mirror 2, Mirror 2 onto the laser head — re-taping and pulse-testing after every change.

If it passes

Every stage lands dead center → go to verify.

If it fails

You cannot center it, or the tube will not reach Mirror 1 → contact Boss support; the bracket or tube may need service.

Step 05

Verify and restore

Goal: Confirm the fix and leave the optics clean and focused.

Actions

  1. Re-clean the focal lens. Boss’s rule of thumb: check alignment after cleaning, and clean after aligning.
  2. Re-focus for the material you are running.
  3. Run a test cut on scrap at your normal settings. The edge should be clean and cut fully through.
  4. Re-check alignment about once a month, and any time the machine takes a hard bump.

If it passes

A clean, full-depth test cut → you’re done.

If it fails

Still weak or incomplete → contact Boss technical support.

Before Production

Recheck focus and cut a test piece before production.
