How is a laser cleaner different from a cutter or a marker?

A cleaner runs a pulsed fiber source and sweeps the beam across the surface, lifting rust, paint, oxide, or oil without cutting into the metal underneath. That is the same way a fiber marker works rather than the way a cutter works — a cutter runs a continuous beam and drives it through the material. It is why cleaning is a surface process, and why the settings that matter are the ones that control how much energy each pulse puts down.

Do I need extraction while cleaning?

Yes. Everything the beam removes has to go somewhere, and it leaves the surface as airborne particulate and fume — old paint and coatings especially. Run extraction at the work, not across the room, and check what you are removing before you start: coatings on older equipment can contain lead or chromate, which changes both the filtration and the disposal you need.

What eye protection and area control does a handheld need?

A handheld puts an open beam in the room, so the enclosure that protects an operator on a cabinet machine is not there. Everyone inside the area needs eyewear rated for the machine’s wavelength — not general safety glasses — and the area itself needs to be controlled so nobody walks into it. The manual carries the specific rating and the setup requirements; follow those rather than a general shop rule.

Cleaning is slow, or it is leaving residue behind. What do I check?

Check the protective lens first — it takes the blow-back from everything you remove, and a hazed lens costs you power before anything else does. Then standoff distance, which sets your focus and is the easiest thing to drift on a handheld. After that it is the balance between power, pulse rate, and how fast you are sweeping: thick or layered coatings need more passes rather than one slow one. If the surface is oily, degrease it first; the beam spends its energy on the oil otherwise.
