What’s safe to laser, what never is, and the ventilation and fire habits that keep a shop out of trouble. Start with the one rule that never bends: no PVC, no vinyl — ever.

Most laser questions are really materials questions. A CO2 laser handles non-metals — wood and plywood, acrylic, genuine leather, paper and card, fabric, felt, cork, and laser-safe rubber — while cutting metal needs a fiber laser, and glass or ceramic engraves rather than cuts. Match the material to the laser type and most jobs go smoothly.

One rule never bends: never laser-cut PVC or vinyl. Burning PVC releases chlorine gas and hydrochloric acid — toxic to breathe and corrosive to the machine’s frame, rails, and optics — and the damage is gradual and permanent even with ventilation running. The same caution covers unknown plastics, PVC-based faux leather, and polycarbonate (Lexan). When in doubt, verify the exact material with the supplier before it goes in the machine.

What materials can a laser cutter cut?

It depends on the laser type. A CO2 laser cuts and engraves non-metals: wood and plywood (laser-grade plywood is best), acrylic, genuine leather, paper and cardstock, fabric and felt, cork, and laser-safe rubber. Cutting metal — steel, stainless, aluminum, brass — needs a fiber laser; a CO2 laser only marks coated or anodized metal, not bare metal. Can you laser engrave PVC?

No — never, on any laser. Lasering PVC releases chlorine gas and hydrochloric acid: toxic to breathe and corrosive to your lungs and to the machine’s frame, rails, and optics. The damage is gradual and permanent, and the fumes are hazardous even with ventilation running — there is no safe laser setting for PVC. Can you cut vinyl with a laser cutter?

No. Most vinyl is PVC (polyvinyl chloride), so lasering it releases toxic, corrosive chlorine gas — and the hazard applies to vinyl sheet, vinyl records, and most adhesive “vinyl” stickers and decals, which are PVC films. Use a mechanical vinyl cutter (a blade plotter) instead: it drags a small blade through the vinyl with no heat or fumes and gives clean, weedable cuts. Can you cut vinyl records with a laser cutter?

What about heat-transfer vinyl (HTV)?

Treat it with the same caution as regular vinyl. Some HTV is polyurethane rather than PVC, but unless the manufacturer confirms it is PVC- and chlorine-free, do not laser it — cut it on a blade plotter. When in doubt, assume it is not laser-safe.

Can you laser engrave plastic?

Yes — many plastics engrave and mark cleanly, but the type matters for both results and safety. A CO2 laser engraves acrylic (the easiest and cleanest), ABS, Delrin (POM), and two-color engraving laminate made for lasers; a fiber laser marks many plastics with high contrast for part numbers and labels. Plastics need far less energy than wood, so start at low power and high speed and test on scrap of the same plastic. Can you laser engrave hard plastic, like eyeglasses or polycarbonate?

It depends on the plastic. Many hard plastics engrave fine, but polycarbonate — common in eyewear and sold as Lexan — discolors, yellows, and burns rather than marking cleanly, so test carefully or avoid it. Never assume an unknown hard plastic is safe; identify it first to rule out PVC, since a mislabeled sheet can be PVC. Full answer →

Do laser engravers need ventilation?

Yes, always — every material gives off smoke and fumes when lasered, even the “safe” ones. Run exhaust vented outside on every job, or a fume-extraction filtration unit where outside venting isn’t possible. Some materials make the point sharply: ABS wants strong ventilation, and Delrin gives off a sharp odor that needs good extraction. Good ventilation also protects the optics and keeps cut quality consistent. What ventilation can’t do is make a dangerous material safe — PVC fumes are hazardous even with exhaust running, which is why PVC never goes in the machine.

Are laser engravers dangerous?

Run properly, no — enclosed machines with safety interlocks keep the beam contained, and laser-safe eyewear covers any time a beam path is exposed. The two real day-to-day risks are fire and fumes. For fire: never leave a running job unattended, keep the bed clear, and know what you’re looking at — a small dancing flame at the cut is normal on combustible materials like wood, while a steady flame is not. Air assist suppresses flare-ups and exhaust pulls the smoke out. For fumes: run ventilation on every job, and never cut PVC or vinyl — that’s the one material hazard no amount of ventilation fixes.

What is air assist in laser engraving?

Air assist is a directed stream of air aimed at the exact point where the beam meets the material. It clears smoke and debris out of the beam path, reduces charring on cuts, and suppresses flare-ups before they can build — which is why it runs on virtually every cutting job. On combustible materials like wood it’s a fire-safety habit as much as a quality setting: it blows out flame and smoke for cleaner edges. Keep it on for plastics too — even laser-safe plastics cut cleaner and safer with air assist and exhaust running.

Are laser engraved cutting boards food safe?

Yes, on bare hardwood or bamboo — the laser chars the wood surface and leaves no toxic residue behind. Engrave before oiling if you can, then finish the board with food-grade mineral oil. The thing to avoid is engraving through varnishes or surface finishes that aren’t rated food-safe. And as with any wood job, run exhaust and stay with the machine while it runs.
